Bernie Sanders at The Young Turks

Thanks to U.S. 2016 democratic primaries I've started following The Young Turks. My timing was quite perfect as few days later that they got Bernie Sanders into the studio and did a pretty good job with interview.

March 26th, Bernie Sanders swept three states with large margins. Perhaps a little bit of credit goes to The Young Turks as well.

Where are the jobs that rich people were supposed to create?

Well, that's the problem of global economy. Rich people created the jobs alright, just not is the U.S. Maximizing profits is the primary goal of capitalism. Workers are needed for production, but the costs are optimized. I hope I don't need a degree in economics or a successful business of my own to convince you.

This is a fundamental issue that many western countries must face, rather sooner than later. The middle class required to keep the economy running is disappearing.

Tens of thousands of people are gathering to Bernie Sanders rallies almost daily. They are learning the fact they have been marginalized by the establishment. The problem isn't going away.

A bad night for Bernie

OK. March 15 wasn't what some expected. Also I was cautiously optimistic against the poll numbers. A while ago I came across a quote that perhaps partly explains the result.
"Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires." - John Steinbeck
Yep, land of opportunity. At the 80's I was a fool enough to believe it, but it's been a while. Well, whatever happens (and everything is still possible), Sanders' campaign will be remembered. People have woken up and hopefully there will be changes to the current corrupted election process and the political system. Sanders winning more states could have forced main stream media to downplay him as much as it did.

The following article by The Nation quite well explains how I'm now seeing the situation.
The Fight for Bernie’s Political Revolution Is Not Over

Why do I care about Bernie?

Why does a Finnish, over 40 year old geek care about Bernie Sanders? Sometimes things just happen. Ultimately I can blame George W. Bush, his republican friends and the Iraq war about it. At the time I wanted to find out what the hell was going on in American politics, as frankly there didn't seem to be much sense left anymore.

It was probably a lucky accident when I much later saw a news piece of Bernie Sanders running for president in 2015. Having watched MSNBC's Olbermann's earlier I knew Bernie was a rare man standing up against the large corporations in American politics. And I just couldn't believe that he was running for president against all imaginable odds.

While I support in the market economy and democracy, I'm not a big fan of current hypercapitalism. The rich are getting richer and there is very little a hope left for common American working class.

And Bernie knows that and wants to change things, as do I. There is an excellent visualization about American income inequality in YouTube. You have to see it to believe it. This is why I care.

What about Bernie?

I've been thinking should my Bernie Sanders fandom take over this blog. Otherwise the real life gas taken priority over this blog. However, I seem (again) to really care about what going on in the world right now and I'm getting more worried. I want to believe that Bernie would be able to show a new direction. The world now needs better examples than the current super-power leaders.

So I wonder, if I should write about Bernie Sanders, the one candidate I see worthy of U.S. presidency, from an outside-U.S. perspective. Would anyone be interested? Or would I have enough skills and energy to make in any difference?

But, who's Bernie? It seems he's able to tell it in less than 80 seconds:

Bernie's Closing Remarks at the Univision Debate
In the wealthiest country in the history of the world, if we stand up and fight back we can do a lot better. That is why I am running for President of the United States of America.
